The need for blood is a constant in today’s world which is why so many organizations focus so intently on blood drives and public awareness. The Houchin Blood Bank, which first opened its doors in 1951, covers all the hospitals and medical centers in Kern County. Houchin Blood Bank is always looking for volunteers to donate blood. According to blood donation experts, blood donations tend to decrease during the holiday season so blood drives during this time are critical to sustain available supplies.
DiamondIT, a Bakersfield-based technology solution provider, is sponsoring a Thanksgiving Blood Drive for the Houchin Blood Bank on Wednesday, November 23, 2016. The blood drive begins at 8 a.m. and will continue until noon. Donors will be treated to beverages, pastries, and DiamondIT swag. In addition, all participants will be able to enter raffles for both, a Target gift card and a gift basket donated by the Bakersfield Condors.
“Blood is critically important and helps save lives – no matter which type of blood a donor has,” says Matt Mayo, CEO of DiamondIT. “This blood drive is an important part of our DiamondIT’s mission to work with worthy organizations, such as the Houchin Blood Bank, and to help promote awareness and the importance of donating blood – especially during the holidays.”
According to the Houchin Blood Bank website: “We are committed to being the sole provider of a safe and adequate blood supply for the hospitals we serve. The supply available is dependent on volunteer donors who walk in to our two donor centers, who participate in mobile drives in communities, at companies, and organizations across the county.”
Before donating blood on November 23, volunteers will need to know the following:
- Photo ID is required at donation time
- Participants 17 and under will need a consent form
- Donors are encouraged to eat a meal and drink plenty of water at least three hours before donating
- Donors should be free of any virus or infection
- The donation process takes only 5 to 10 minutes
