Did you know that every two seconds someone needs blood in the U.S.?
Giving blood is one way to “give thanks” this Thanksgiving holiday. Helping to fill the large need in Kern County, DiamondIT is sponsoring a community blood drive this coming Wednesday, November 23 from 8 a.m. until noon. The DiamondIT blood drive will benefit the Houchin Blood Bank, which services all the hospitals and medical centers in Kern County.
The DiamondIT Community Blood Drive will treat donors to beverages, pastries, and DiamondIT swag. In addition, all participants will be able to enter raffles for both, a Target gift card and a gift basket donated by the Bakersfield Condors.
According to the Houchin Blood Bank, it takes about 110 donors each day, or more than 18,000 donors a year, to meet Kern County’s need for blood and to serve all the hospitals and transfusion centers in the county. Because blood has a shelf life of only 42 days, supplies must be replenished regularly.
Blood Donation Process:
Many people who haven’t given blood before may be anxious. The Houchin Blood Bank officials assure donors that the process is painless and the actual giving of blood takes about 5-10 minutes. However, the entire process, from registration to post-donation refreshments, takes 30 minutes or more.
If you are worried about losing blood, the Houchin Blood Bank assures would-be donors, “The volume of fluids will adjust within a few hours of your donation. The red blood cells will be replaced within a few weeks.” However, it is advised to eat well at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of fluids.
What Happens After I Donate?
According to the Red Cross, blood donation is multi-step process. About one pint of blood and several small test tubes are collected from each donor. The bag, test tubes and the donor information are labeled and then stored in iced coolers until it is transported to the blood bank. Most blood is spun in centrifuges to separate the transfusable components – red cells, platelets, and plasm.
